Eleven-year-old orphan Anne Shirley comes to Green Gables on Prince Edward Island from an orphanage. Anne is imaginative, cheerful, and has distinctive red hair.
The Cuthbert siblings, Matthew and Marilla, who took her in, had actually wanted a boy. However, Matthew completely takes a liking to Anne on the way home, and Marilla, who had planned to send her back to the orphanage, struggles after learning about Anne’s pure heart and sad past.
